About Dr. Paynter's Workshop
Learn how to develop an instructional approach that can be used in home and classroom settings and specifically engages the gifted mind and imagination.
Many gifted children struggle with social skill deficits that directly result from their advanced abilities, and learning how to navigate the social arena of typical peers who may not share a similar sense of humor, interests or sensitivities can be excruciating.
Social Skill programs designed to support children with Autism or Asperger’s are usually therapeutic in nature and often lack the type of content that intellectually engages gifted students. Meanwhile, Social Skill and Social Thinking programs designed for the general population often lack the level of complexity that engages a gifted mind.
At this year's Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) conference, Dr. Paynter will host a workshop presenting her approach to inspiring the intellectual and creative interests (read: Critical Thinking) of gifted students while training them in Social Thinking.
About the SENG Conference
Most conferences about giftedness focus primarily on educational issues. While they may include a few presentations about the social and emotional development and needs of gifted people and the challenges facing the gifted population, these presentations play a minor role.
SENG conferences reverse the priorities. SENG believes that recognizing, understanding and accepting the social and emotional needs of this population are the first priorities for parents, teachers and counselors. SENG supports strong gifted education programs, but it believes the emotional piece is the foundation for the development of healthy, happy, well-adjusted, appropriately educated and contributing gifted members of society.
The theme for 2015 is SOAR with SENG, for Seeking Opportunities And Resources.
